Gravity Wave Drag in a Global Circulation Model of the Martian Atmosphere: Parametrisation and Validation

چکیده

The eeect of orographically generated breaking gravity waves is parametrised in a global circulation model of the Martian atmosphere using schemes adapted from terrestrial models. The schemes arètuned' by comparing model integrations with and without gravity wave drag with temperatures derived from the Mariner 9 IRIS instrument. Without gravity wave drag the global circulation model temperature eld has excessively cold upper level polar regions. Gravity wave drag can correct for such cold temperatures by warming the atmosphere adiabatically via a dynamically induced circulation. The model climatology is signiicantly improved in the polar regions with the introduction of the parametrisation.

P2.1 Redistribution of Angular Momentum in a Global Forecast Model Due to Change in Drag Parameterizations

Contemporary numerical models of the global atmosphere include parameterizations of various drag mechanisms, e.g., orographic and convective gravity wave drag (GWD), mountain drag, surface friction drag, and artificial model top drag. These mechanisms, except for friction drag, directly affect the magnitude of the polar night jet, whose variation significantly affects the tropospheric circulati...

The influence of orographic Rossby and gravity waves on rainfall

Orography is known to influence winter precipitation in Asia and the Indo-Pacific Ocean by mechanically forcing winds, but the dynamics involved in the precipitation response are incompletely understood. This study investigates how two types of orographically forced oscillatory motions alter time-mean winds and precipitation. The quasi-geostrophic omega equation is used together with previous i...

Evaluating the performance of Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models (AOGCM) in simulating temperature variable in Ahwaz and Abadan stations

Climate changes caused by global warming has presented challenges to human society. Studying the Changes of climate variables in the future decades by using output data’s of Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models (AOGCM) is a way of perusing climate fluctuation in a region. In this study, the focus is on the AOGCM proceeds in simulating of variable temperature in Ahwaz and Abadan stations. ...

Solution of propagation of acoustic-gravity waves in the atmosphere using finite difference method of order two

Investigating waves propagation’s equation in the atmosphere is one of the important and widely used issues in various sciences, which has attracted many researchers. A type of propagating waves is an acoustic-gravity wave. These type of waves have a lot of stationarity properties and can be propagate to a high altitude in the atmosphere. The equation of acoustic-gravity wave propagation is a h...

The Angular Momentum Constraint on Climate Sensitivity and Downward Influence in the Middle Atmosphere

It is shown that under reasonable assumptions, conservation of angular momentum provides a strong constraint on gravity wave drag feedbacks to radiative perturbations in the middle atmosphere. In the time mean, radiatively induced temperature perturbations above a given altitude z cannot induce changes in zonal mean wind and temperature below z through feedbacks in gravity wave drag alone (assu...
